Alexander Spendiaryan (Armenian: Ալեքսանդր Սպենդիարյան, Russian: Александр Афанасьевич Спендиаров ) (1871-1928) was a key figure in the development of Armenian musical culture, and like Tigranian - a few of whose Caucasian dances I have recorded - a student of Rimsky-Korsakov. Spendiaryan was also an associate of Cui, Arensky and Glazounov. Although h Spendiaryan's family were Armenian, he was actually brought up in Simferopol, capital of the Crimean Republic, and after his studies he continued to live there, and only moved to Armenia in 1924. He became a professor at the Yerevan conservatory until his untimely death from pneumonia. He is best known for his opera 'Almast', and symphonic and vocal works. This lively and exotic piano piece dates from 1895. For more information on the composer, and pictures of his house in Yerevan (now a museum), see www.spendiaryanmuseum.am ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk
