Yamaha P95 Digital Piano chronicle

The Yamaha P95 Digital Piano is the replacement for the P85. There are many habitancy who will have had a lot of fun with the P85 and are mostly happy with the sounds and the potential of the keyboard action. For the price, it is unquestionably worth it.

The P95 was launched at Namm in the Usa and isn't yet ready in the Uk, but retailers should be receiving stock imminently. As always with any new replacement there are varying opinions on either there is any revision or not.

Piano Concerto

There are some habitancy who are quite obviously disappointed that there is no revision on the action or the piano sounds, but to make advancements on these would require a considerable hike up in the price. The P95 will be aimed at the same shop i.e. Beginners, or players who are not so concerned with the number of sounds and want to keep it straightforward - which is why a lot a churches use them. You'll find abundance of habitancy happy with the P85, the action and potential of sounds and the Yamaha P95 digital piano will be upholding this tradition.

Yamaha have supplanted two of the on-board sounds with two new ones namely the Jazz Organ and Choir. There are a few habitancy who think Yamaha should have been additional. But hey, you can't please everyone, and if I was playing in a church I would like a choir sound. I'm also sure that the more modern churches will appreciate the Jazz Organ.

I haven't tested out the piano sounds yet, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Yamaha have made some improvements there. One feature they have definitely improved is the on-board speakers, which have increased power now. In a live environment you would probably still need to hook up to an amp, which I would propose doing anyway.

In overview I would say that the P95 will be a great choice for beginners and players who aren't concerned with having a huge choice of sounds, but want a good action, a full size keyboard at a cheap price.

If you aren't convinced, or you don't like the new sounds you could always check for P85's being sold at a allowance by retailers.

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances/ Vocalise/ Etudes-tableaux

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances/ Vocalise/ Etudes-tableaux Review

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances/ Vocalise/ Etudes-tableaux Overview

Written in 1940, the Symphonic Dances represent Rachmaninov at the peak of his powers as an orchestral composer. Less lush than his earlier works, free of sentimentality, imaginatively orchestrated, and full of lively rhythms, the piece is red meat for a virtuoso orchestra. The Minnesotans rise to the challenge with superb ensemble and countless solo turns done to perfection. Oue's interpretation, flexible and pointed, lets the dance rhythms drive the three movements and consistently strikes the right mood; just listen to the frigid trumpets that open the second movement and the swirling winds that alternate with them. The Vocalise gets a lovely reading, followed by Respighi's arrangement of five Études-Tableaux that turn those virtuoso piano pieces into deliciously orchestrated tone poems. Kick the volume control up and you get state-of-the-art sonics--solid bass, overwhelming climaxes, and dynamics as wide as a Kansas sky. --Dan Davis

Ballet Music by Offenbach, Rachmaninov, & Smetana

Ballet Music by Offenbach, Rachmaninov, & Smetana Review

Ballet Music by Offenbach, Rachmaninov, & Smetana Overview

The Philadelphia Orchestra was Rachmaninoff's favorite band. He conducted them himself, and formed a close working relationship with both Leopold Stokowski in the 1920s, and then with Eugene Ormandy. He was reported to have been very disappointed when Ormandy gave a cool reception to the opportunity to conduct the Symphonic Dances premiere, and Ormandy didn't make this recording until a couple of decades later. It's most notable for the typically rich and lovely string sound that Ormandy draws from his players. While other performances may be more exciting, this one does have a certain idiomatic stamp which, at budget price, is worth a listen. --David Hurwitz

Can or May - Which is Correct?

Modals (perhaps you learned them in school as a kind of auxiliary or "helping" verbs) are among the most confusing English words to master. And no wonder: also their refusal to follow the patterns verbs usually take, we also use some of them interchangeably so usually that we forget they are not same in meaning. Can and may are two of the English modals that have fallen into that pattern.

The basic inequity between can and may is pretty simple. Can is about ability; may is about permission*. Think these two examples:
John is a piano prodigy who can flawlessly recreate a full concerto after hearing it only once.
John may play the piano after he finishes the liver-and-onion casserole his mom made for dinner.

Piano Concerto

In the first sentence, the focus is on John's broad capability: he Can. In the second, John's potential to play is beside the point; under what condition he is allowed to practice his talent is the question: he May.

When you're not sure which to use, jog your memory by thinking of these two celebrated instances.

Sammy Davis, Jr.'s song "Yes I Can" = Ability

vs.

the children's game "Mother, May I?" = Permission

Try distinguishing the inequity with a few example sentences. Perfect each one with either can or may.

1) A talented chef ___ put in order a delicious cake without using any dairy, egg, or wheat products.

2) ___ I borrow your car while you are on vacation?

3) Passengers ___ not walk nearby the cabin while the "Fasten Seatbelts" sign is on.

4) If he takes a running start, Phil ___ accomplish a long jump of over twelve feet.

5) The boss knows Wilma ___ do the job; it requires the skills Wilma demonstrated in her old position.

Answers: Sentences 1, 4, and 5 need can; may completes 2 and 3.

English speakers are often guilty of using can in both instances. In daily speech, chances are most population wouldn't even consideration the substitution. The Chicago by hand of Style (15th Edition) acknowledges that, in informal situations, can is often used to indicate permission in the same way may is above. However, Chicago also offers a caveat: in any kind of formal writing, may to express permission is far preferable to can. Likewise, in a speaking situation other than casual conversation, it would be prudent to consciously use the correct modal.

*May has a second usage as well: an expression of possibility. (Ex: If conditions are right, I may go fishing this weekend.) However, that usage is more ordinarily confused with might than with can--a question which will be addressed separately in a hereafter article.

Can or May - Which is Correct?

Rubinstein - Brahms, Piano Concerto No.1 - I Maestoso (1/3) Video Clips. Duration : 7.58 Mins.

Director : Bernard Haitink. Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam. Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor (Op. 15) is one of Brahms' most famous and frequently performed pieces. A concerto on nearly every major pianist's repertoire, it presents considerable technical challenges to the performer. Brahms worked on the composition for some years, as was the case with many of his works. After a prolonged gestation period, it was first performed on January 22, 1859, in Hanover, Germany, when Brahms was just 25 years old. Five days later, at Leipzig, an unenthusiastic audience hissed at the concerto, while critics savaged it, labelling it "perfectly unorthodox, banal and horrid". In a letter to his close personal friend, the renowned violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms stated, "I am only experimenting and feeling my way", adding sadly, "all the same, the hissing was rather too much!" Brahms originally conceived the work as a sonata for two pianos. Seeking a grander and fuller sound, Brahms later orchestrated the work in an attempt to transform it into a four-movement symphony. However, he also found that unsatisfactory. Brahms ultimately decided that he had not sufficiently mastered the nuances of orchestral color to sustain a symphony, and instead relied on his skills as a pianist and composer for the piano to complete the work as a concerto. Brahms only retained the original material from the work's first movement; the remaining movements were discarded and two new ones were ...

Fiesta!

Fiesta! Review

Fiesta! Overview

Howard Dunn died just weeks after the release of this 1990 recording. He had served for 20 years on the faculty of Southern Methodist University, where he led the SMU Wind Symphony and taught music history and conducting. As the founder and artistic director of the Dallas Wind Symphony, which made its debut in 1985, he helped transform what was initially a sight-reading group into one of the few all-professional, non-military wind bands in the country. That Dunn left behind a first-rate organization is clear enough from these readings. The virtuosic writing of Gould's Santa Fe Saga sparks the Texans to some fine playing, as does the colorful scoring of H. Owen Reed's La Fiesta Mexicana--a large-scale work that pays off its debt to Hindemith, and its even more evident borrowings from Petrushka, in shiny new pesos. The extraordinary ambiance of the Meyerson Symphony Center is nicely captured as well: live but not too reverberant, with a superbly graduated decay, it proves to be ideal for this music. --Ted Libbey

Yuja Wang: Rachmaninov Overview

Yuja Wang joins the legendary maestro on her first orchestral album. To the challenging Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 2, she adds the daunting Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Yuja Wang and Claudio Abbado kindle the Mahler Chamber Orchestra into blazes of beauty. Yuja Wang, Gramophone's "Young Artist of the Year" 2009, hearkens to the no-holds-barred pianistic sensations of the 19th century "Whereas many pianists try to dominate this set of variations, she worked with it. This approach simply gave more punch to the places in which the piano should jump out of the texture" (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Beethoven - Für Elise (piano solo)

Beethoven - Für Elise (piano solo) Video Clips. Duration : 4.13 Mins.

Für Elise, by Ludwig van Beethoven, played by Stephen Malinowski, with bar-graph and conventional scores. FAQ Q: Where can I get the music for this piece? A: The score in the video is available for free here: www.musanim.com And here's a version for a solo melody instrument (like flute): www.musanim.com Q: What does "Für Elise" mean? A: For Elisa; read more about it here: en.wikipedia.org Q: I am trying to learn this piece, but the rhythm is confusing. Help! A: You are right, the rhythm is confusing. I had the same trouble when I was first trying to learn the piece. The reason for this is that Beethoven is playing a rhythmic trick on us; the piece is notated in 3/8 time, but the notes sometimes form 3/8 groups and sometimes form 3/4 groups (or, at the beginning, 2/4). I've made a version of the score that shows how this works; you might find that it is easier to learn from this: www.musanim.com Q: I want to learn to play the piano; what advice can you give me? A: I've put some suggestions here: www.musanim.com Q: Did Beethoven write this when he was deaf? A: Beethoven started losing his hearing in 1796, when he was about 26 years old; Carl Czerny said that he could hear music in 1812, but he was almost completely deaf by 1814. He wrote Fur Elise 1808 and 1810, so he probably could hear it, at least a little. In any case, he could certainly hear it perfectly "in his head," since he could read music (and hear in it his "mind's ear") just as easily as most people can read ...

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 Review

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 Overview

These are fine performances. Zimerman's playing can be somewhat self-conscious, and at times he seems to be aware that he ought to say something new about these well-known works, but he's never less than animated. The first concerto comes across as stylish and warm, with the melodies clear amidst the sheer brilliance of the playing and the rhythms strongly underlined. The lack of mania is most welcome. (Earl Wild's performance of this work on Chandos, however, is more spectacular than any other.) The second, better-known work, is an honest, straightforward reading, with the first movement's finale expansive and grand, an Adagio of surprising affection and meditation, and a final movement in which the very familiar second melody shows up almost surprisingly in its freshness. If this lacks the tension found in some other recordings, it makes up for it in a non-garish boldness which shines. The recording of choice here is Ashkenazy's on Decca, but, again, both of these concerti are well-served by Zimerman, and Ozawa's leadership of the BSO is masterful. --Robert Levine

Sergey Rachmaninov: Liturgy Of St. John Chrysostom, Op. 31 Overview

You might not expect to find an outstandingly well-sung and idiomatic recording of so profoundly Russian a work as Sergey Vassilyevich Rachmaninoff's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom emanating from the Heartland and a group called the Kansas City Chorale, but you would be limiting yourself and your expectations unnecessarily. This is a beautifully realized performance of a spiritually moving and harmonically lovely score. It is a more complete version than that recorded by the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, and for that reason is the first choice in CDs of this music. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Bach: Concertos for Piano and Orchestra Nos. 1-5 & 7 (The Glenn Gould Edition)

Bach: Concertos for Piano and Orchestra Nos. 1-5 & 7 (The Glenn Gould Edition) Review

Bach: Concertos for Piano and Orchestra Nos. 1-5 & 7 (The Glenn Gould Edition) Overview

Glenn Gould was this century's greatest Bach player, so these legendary recordings are self-recommending. While other fine pianists have made powerful statements in this music, no one sounds anything like Gould. His phenomenal clarity of articulation, digital control, and well, just plain interesting way with the music set him completely apart from the competition. With playing of this individuality and quality, it's pointless to engage in any debate with respect to the appropriateness of the piano versus the harpsichord. Scholars and pedants may continue to argue, but the fact is, it doesn't matter. Great musicianship always serves great music best. --David Hurwitz

Most habitancy don't perceive you can indeed learn to read violin sheet music relatively quickly. Read on to learn more about the discrete stages of learning to read music and how you can speed straight through them.

Learning the Theory
The first step to learning to read sheet music is to learn the theory. What do the discrete clefts and symbols mean? How do you read a note? What's an octave?

Piano Concerto

Learning the ideas is the first step. At first, it may be slow or confusing. As you go over it again and again, the ideas will start to make more and more sense to you.

The "theory learning" stage ends when you're able to read notes, no matter how gradually you can read them.

The Proficiency Stage
The next stage is to become proficient at reading sheet music. This step usually involves quite a bit of practice. Basically, the goal of this stage is to go from consciously reading music with mystery to unconsciously being able to read music with ease, without having to think about it.

If you convention right, this stage can take only a month or two.

Learning to Read Sheet Music The Fast Way

Learning to read music can take a long time. That is, if you do it the original way. If you work with a tutor to learn how to read music, here's what the typical learning curve might look like:

-          Week 1: learning the theory
-          Week 2: learning the notes, how to read notes, convention reading basic notes
-          Week 3: learning something else while continuing to read notes
-          Week 4: Semi-proficient at reading music

On the other hand, you can learn to read notes in under a week. How? By going at your own pace, rather than having to wait a week between lessons. If you could do a episode every day, or even any lessons in a day, just imagine how fast you'd learn.

You can do this without racking up the costs by using online violin episode videos. The videos are nearly as good as learning from a real teacher at far less cost. You'll pick up skills and techniques much faster too because you can go as speedily as you want.

Guitar Tab - How to Play Twinkle, Twinkle slight Star on Guitar

Have you ever wished you could play a melody on your guitar? Now you will learn how to play Twinkle, Twinkle, dinky Star without sheet music! Let me take you to the first note of the song with the help of guitar tab notation!

Here you have the first note written with amount guitar tablature:

Piano Concerto

03

The first amount tells you which fret to play, in this case you will not press down any fret which is indicated with the amount 0. This is called to play an open string. The second amount indicates which string to play. In this melody you will start with the third string.

The strings are numbered starting with the bottom string on your guitar. You will use three strings to play the melody. The first string or the bottom string is called E, the second string B and the third string G. We will give the G-string a amount instead and as you already have seen call it 3.

Now it is time to start playing the melody. Here is the first line of lyrics with the corresponding melody written with amount guitar tabs:

(G)Twinkle, twinkle, (C)little (G)star

03 03 32 32 01 01 32

32 means, press down the third fret on the second string and play the note! As you can see I have included the recommend chords to use in brackets before the syllable where you are to turn chords. Great if you are two guitarists playing together!

Here are the next guitar tabs:

(D7)How I (G)wonder (D7)what you (G)are!

12 12 02 02 23 23 03

I propose that you use your right hand index to play the notes on the first fret, the middle finger for notes on the second fret and your middle finger for the third fret notes!

You might feel that it is a bit difficult to use your left hand fingers this way but if you are patient you will find that you are able to keep your hand in the same position as you play which will help you when you play more industrialized melodies!

Another benefit is that your fingers will have their fixed frets to work with which will help you find your way best on the fretboard and you will be able to play without looking at your fingers all the time!

(G)Up a(D7)bove the (G)world so (D7)high

32 32 12 12 02 02 23

(G)Like a (D7)diamond (G)in the (D7)sky!

32 32 12 12 02 02 23

The actual length of the personel notes in the melody is not indicated with this type of guitar tab notation but as you already know the melody I propose that you learn how to play the rhythm by singing the melody aloud or in your head!

(G)Twinkle, twinkle, (C)little (G)star

03 03 32 32 01 01 32

(D7)How I (G)wonder (D7)what you (G)are!

12 12 02 02 23 23 03

Now you have learned how to play Twinkle, Twinkle, dinky Star on your guitar!

As I mentioned, I call this type of notation amount tablature and it is a suitable way to display melodies in text form but a more coarse way to show guitar tabs is by using a staff with six lines representing the strings and numbers on the lines indicating the frets. You will find this notation on many guitar sites!

I propose that you memorize the melody line by line instead of looking at the numbers. This way you will have way to the melody whenever a guitar is available!

Yoruba Andabo - El Callejon De Los Rumberos - Soy Todo

Yoruba Andabo - El Callejon De Los Rumberos - Soy Todo Tube. Duration : 1.38 Mins.

Artist: Yoruba Andabo Track: Soy Todo ©AYVA Musica Producciones, SL This name is nothing more than the conjugation of two words from African dialects. Yoruba is the name given to an extensive territory in southern Africa, inhabited by several nations and consequently their cultures. The word Andabo, in Carabalí language, means: friend, follower, admirer. Therefore, "Yoruba Andabo", seeks to be something like "the friends, the admirers and followers of the yoruba lands and their cultures." This group had its genesis in the Havana Docks where, in 1961, a group of workers met and created what was known then as "Guaguancó Marítimo Portuario." When they became professional, the group was re-baptized "YORUBA ANDABO" when, in 1986, they started working in a series of activities for and with the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC). These activities were organized by Cuban poet Eloy "The Ambia" Machado, who put the group in contact with singer and composer Pablo Milanés, who invited them to participate in the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the record company EGREM. From that moment on they started carrying out important work with folk singer Merceditas Valdés. In 1994, as they stepped into a new working stage, they adopted the name Folkloric Company YORUBA ANDABO. The company is made up of seventeen artists, including singers, percussionists and dancers, and professionally performs the most important genres of both religious and profane music within the Africans ...

Piano Chords for Beginners 1: Learn to Play the Carol, Silent Night With Three Easy Chords

In this free beginners keyboard part on Silent Night, learn to play this classic Christmas carol with just three straightforward piano chords. This is just one of many beautiful beginner piano tunes that you can learn to play using only a few basic chords.

In this Piano Chords for Beginners narrative series, I will introduce the most base piano chords and show how they can be used to make straightforward accompaniments for some predominant old Christmas carols. Look for the other articles in this series:

Piano Concerto

-- Away in a Manger
-- with G Major, C Major and D Major

-- Good King Wenceslas -- with Bb Major, C Major, F Major and D Minor

-- O Christmas Tree -- with C Major, F Major, D Minor and C Seventh

Silent Night: Three Major Chords

For Silent Night we only need the following three Major chords:

-- C Major: C E G

-- F Major: F A C

-- G Major: G B D

Play the three notes together with the fifth finger, the third finger and the first finger (thumb) of your left hand. Play these chords in the two octaves below Middle C on your piano. Institution until you are well-known with these chords and can find them speedily on your keyboard.

Tune of Silent Night

Play the following melody of Silent Night with your right hand, starting on G in the octave above Middle C. Start with the second finger of your right hand on the G. There are three quarter-note or crotchet beats in each bar in this tune. The ][ seal represents a bar line separating the bars.

Silent ][ night, ][ holy ][ night! ][

G A G ][ E ][ G A G ][ E ][

All is ][ calm, ][ all is ][ bright, ][

D D ][ B ][ C C ][ G ][

'Round yon ][ Virgin ][ mom and ][ Child.][

A A ][ C B A ][ G A G ][ E ][

Holy ][ baby so ][ tender and ][ mild, ][

A A ][ C B A ][ G A G ][ E ][

Sleep in ][ heavenly ][ pea- ][ ce, ][

D D ][ F D B ][ C ][ E ][

Sleep in ][ heavenly ][ peace. ][

C G E ][ G F D ][ C ][

Practice playing this until you can remember the whole tune. Alternatively, copy the tune notes onto your printout of the Silent Night Piano Chords below: write the tune notes into the blank lines below the chord lines.

Silent Night Piano Chords

Here are the piano chords to accompany the tune of Silent Night. As you play the melody, play these chords with your left hand in a quarterly rhythm on the first beats of the bars.

Silent ][ night, ][ holy ][ night! ][

C-------][C-------][C-------][C-------][

All is ][ calm, ][ all is ][ bright, ][

G-------][G-------][C--------][C-------][

'Round yon ][ Virgin ][ mom and ][ Child.][

F--------][F--------][C--------][C--------][

Holy ][ baby so ][ tender and ][ mild, ][

F--------][F---------][C--------][C--------][

Sleep in ][ heavenly ][ pea - ][ ce, ][

G-------][G-------][C-------][C-------][

Sleep in ][ heavenly ][ peace. ][

C-------][G-------][C-------][

But wait, there's more!

This straightforward arrangement only uses Major chords but there are many other types of chords that can add beauty and divergence to your piano accompaniments. For example, there are Minor, Seventh, Diminished, Augmented and Suspended piano chords. Some piano chord tutors expect you to individually memorize these dozens of chords -- an breathtaking task! Other systems expect you to work out the notes of each chord by counting up oodles of half-steps or semitones. But there is a much easier way!

The straightforward relationships in the middle of the chord types are the key to an easy technique for working out any type of piano chord that you want. And you can also take benefit of the huge range of music in Hal Leonard's perfect Fake Book series if you learn how to read the notes on at least the treble staff. It has never been easier to learn to play beginner piano songs with your own unique style of accompaniment!

Baldwin Pianos

Pianos are very significant and high-priced musical instruments and pieces of art. Often, transporting one would require the services of professional piano movers, especially if the brand of piano is one that is customary and prestigious. An example of this is a Baldwin piano, made by the Baldwin Piano company.

During its peak, the Baldwin firm was the biggest U.S.-based piano constructor in the country. It would at last be a subsidiary of Gibson Guitar Corporation early in the 2000s, but before then, Baldwin Piano's 120+ years of history would see the yield of an unprecedented amount of pianos, shipped all over the world, and prized by many.

Piano Concerto

Baldwin Piano firm began when Dwight Hamilton Baldwin, after selling Decker Pianos for 10+ years with his firm partner, Lucien Wulsin, decided he wanted to make "the best piano that could be built". In 1891, the first Baldwin Piano was made, and 4 years later came the first grand piano.

Dwight Baldwin did not live to see his company's legacy, however, as he passed away in 1899. Lucien Wulsin would take the reins and drive the firm to the future, as Baldwin Pianos became recognized all over the world, winning a amount of awards and recognitions from the industry. In 1913, because of all its success, the firm was exporting to around 32 countries all over the world.

The Great Depression and World War Ii would prove to be troubling times, yet both times the firm would rise up and overcome the challenges. In the Great Depression, the firm survived due to funds reserved by Lucien Wulsin Ii. And in World War Ii, the Baldwin factories, after being used by the military, brought about new manufacturing techniques that would expand the yield of the pianos.

Success would be plentiful for the next couple of decades, but when the 70s and the 80s hit, things began to change. Baldwin was forced into bankruptcy in 1983, and after a 15 year resurgence into the market, would do so again in the early 2000, forcing their sale to Gibson Guitar Corporation.

Nevertheless, Baldwin's instruments continue to be very popular today, and are still being used by some of the best modern artists in the music industry.

Rachmaninov, Franck: Cello Sonatas

Rachmaninov, Franck: Cello Sonatas Review

Rachmaninov, Franck: Cello Sonatas Overview

Steven Isserlis is not only one of the finest, but one of the most adventurous cellists around; you can always trust him to have a surprise in store. On this disc, he pairs two famous sonatas with two of their composers' unfamiliar pieces: a slow, singing Prelude and an exotic Oriental Dance by Rachmaninov, and two songs with cello obbligato, one secular, one sacred, by Franck. The playing throughout is beyond praise. Isserlis' instrumental mastery is complete; technical problems do not exist. His tone is beautiful, dark, warm, focused, infinitely variable in color, nuance and intensity, flawlessly pure on all strings and in every register. His playing is striking for its unfailing nobility; free but controlled, it is inwardly expressive but never sentimental, ardently romantic and passionate but never excessive. The slow opening of the Rachmaninov is pure magic: unvibrated, it feels like a reluctant, gradual awakening. The movement is played for poetic, pensive lyri! cism, not bravura, but builds up to a passionate climax and ends in a blaze of glory. The Scherzo is ominous, the Trio is warmly serene, the slow movement sings luxuriously, and the Finale is brilliant, joyful, triumphant. Pianist Stephen Hough gives free rein to his virtuosity, but never overpowers the cello; his approach is more freely rhapsodic than that of Isserlis, but their interplay, ensemble, and balance are excellent. They play the Franck so convincingly that one almost forgets this is really a violin sonata. (In his always enlightening, entertaining program notes, Isserlis claims that both versions are equally authentic.) Though one misses the shimmering radiance of the violin's high register in the corner movements, their dreamy, sunlit serenity remains intact; the cello tone has a floating, disembodied transparency, but builds up tremendous power in the climaxes. The second movement is fast and tempestuous, while the third is very free and imaginative, almost op! eratic in its contrasts and mood changes. --Edith Eisler

Grieg: Piano Concerto; Symphonic Dances [Hybrid SACD]

Grieg: Piano Concerto; Symphonic Dances [Hybrid SACD] Review

Grieg: Piano Concerto; Symphonic Dances [Hybrid SACD] Overview

In his own words, Grieg aspired ‘to paint Norwegian nature, Norwegian folk-life, Norwegian history and Norwegian folk-poetry in music’. In Autumn sees Grieg take inspiration from the forces of nature, both life-giving and destructive, whether it be from the farmers’ harvest celebrations or he ensuing death and decay, while the Symphonic Dances make extensive use of Norwegian folk-melodies. Indeed it has often been said that the famous Piano Concerto has an lement of untamed wildness in its opening timpani roll followed by the cascading chimes of the piano. Whatever its inspiration, this cornerstone of the piano repertoire remains one of most enduringly-popular of all concertos on account of its profusion of inspired melodies, noble eloquence and poetic vitality.
